A latterday Romantic, Arnold Bax lost ground in the 1950s, as the British critical establishment sought to promote more recent musical trends to gain ground abroad. Bax's rhapsodic genius and brilliant sense of orchestration eventually won him new audiences in the 1980s and 1990s. This symphony, from 1935, was his next to last, and is considered by many his masterpiece in that vein.
